Church Renovation FAQ

What renovations have already been made? 

Hopefully you have noticed the beautification of the church grounds: 

• Bushes and palm trees on the dividers in the front parking lot
• Clearing of land near neighbor’s fenced yards for a beautiful garden with paths and picnic tables 
• Cemetery next to church 
• Playground – making it safer and new equipment coming  
• Planters and flowers outside at entrance to the Family Life Center Atrium 

I hear the church will expand its seating capacity. Why and by how much? 

• Yes, the seating capacity will increase by 50% - from 300 now to 450.  Some masses are currently overcrowded. In addition, growth of the congregation is expected – especially families with children. 
• The decision to expand seating was voiced in a survey Fr. Peter conducted at all the masses in 2022. 

What other renovation did the parish want to make? 

The parish wanted a covered drop-off loop in the front of church to assist parishioners with mobility challenges and to keep us dry when it rains.  Limousines for funerals and weddings can be accommodated in this loop too. 

I hear the church will be getting new pews – why? What will happen to the pews we have now?

• To add extra seating, more pews need to be installed. We looked into purchasing more of the pews identical to the ones in church now. They would need to be custom-made, upholstered and unbolted to place them in the new seating design. This was cost-prohibitive, compared to the purchase of all-new pews.   
• Old pews will be offered for free to any church in the area that may need or want them. Help us find such churches that need new seating and give any names to the parish office. 

What will the new pews look like?

The new pews will be more ergonomic, making them more comfortable as people lean back to sit. Kneelers will be upholstered. The stain color and material for the kneelers will be decided by a committee of volunteers selected by the Pastoral Council. 

Will the large colorful banner and crucifix remain in the church?

• The banner, though unique and beautiful, is 50 years old and showing its age. It will be taken down and recommendations can be made to the Pastoral Council. 
• The large crucifix will be moved. It will be mounted where the banner is now. 

Who are the players in the renovation project? 

• Boudreaux Company in Columbia, the architect used by Fr. Peter for the first design 
• Our General Contractor has much experience in the diocese and is highly thought of. 
• A parishioner, who worked in acoustical engineering for many years, is a volunteer consultant. 
• A parishioner who is a subcontractor for our General Contractor.  He is coordinating potential help from our parish. In addition, the Pastoral Council and Finance Council provide input on an ongoing basis.  The Pastoral Council meets monthly and is an open meeting if any parishioner wishes to attend. 
• A committee of volunteers selected by the Pastoral Council will provide input about outstanding questions of finishing touches. 
• Leaders of the Anglo and Hispanic choirs were asked for input on the designs before presenting the designs to the Diocese. 

Does a parish renovation plan have to be approved by the Diocese?

YES! Every aspect of a renovation needs Diocesan approval, which our plan has to date. 

How is the renovation project being funded? Does the church have to take out a loan?

• A major funding source for this renovation is the Bicentennial Campaign which began in 2019. Many parishioners made three-year-pledges. Each parish was eligible to receive money collected over the goal set by the diocese. Due to Covid, some pledge payments have been delayed and are still coming in. 
• The project is also being financed by part of the parish’s savings account. NO loan will need to be secured for this project. 
• More information will be coming to you about memorial donations for the renovation. 

Why is this renovation being done now? 

The funds from the Bicentennial Campaign were collected for this purpose. The church needs more seating and updating now. Costs for design, labor and materials continually increase the longer the renovation is delayed. 

I hear that the space for the music ministries will be downsized quite a bit. Is this true? If so, why?

The need to make space for more pews affected some current space allotments. Our General Contractor says that the space alotted to the chorus is very generous compared to other churches of similar size.  The music ministers will be working together to be creative in making the space work for the parish. 

How can I offer suggestions?

The best method for asking any questions about the parish is to attend the Pastoral Council monthly meetings.  This is an open meeting for all parishioners.  Suggestions can be made at the end of the meeting for the Pastoral Council to consider. 

¿Qué renovaciones ya se han realizado?

Esperamos que hayas notado la embellecimiento de los terrenos de la iglesia:

• Arbustos y palmeras en los separadores del estacionamiento frontal.
• Despeje de terreno cerca de los patios cercados de los vecinos para un hermoso jardín con senderos y mesas de picnic.
• Cementerio junto a la iglesia.
• Área de juegos: haciéndola más segura y con nuevos equipos por venir.
• Jardineras y flores afuera en la entrada del Atrio del Centro de Vida Familiar.

He oído que la iglesia aumentará su capacidad de asientos. ¿Por qué y en cuánto?

• Sí, la capacidad de asientos aumentará en un 50% - de 300 ahora a 450. Algunas misas actualmente están abarrotadas. Además, se espera un crecimiento de la congregación, especialmente de familias con niños.
  
• La decisión de ampliar los asientos se expresó en una encuesta que el Padre Peter realizó en todas las misas en 2022.

¿Qué otras renovaciones quería hacer la parroquia?

La parroquia quería un área cubierta de desembarque en el frente de la iglesia para asistir a los feligreses con problemas de movilidad y para mantenernos secos cuando llueve. Las limusinas para funerales y bodas también pueden acomodarse en este área.

He oído que la iglesia tendrá nuevos bancos – ¿por qué? ¿Qué pasará con los bancos que tenemos ahora?

• Para agregar asientos adicionales, se necesitan instalar más bancos. Consideramos la compra de más bancos idénticos a los actuales. Estos tendrían que ser hechos a medida, tapizados y desatornillados para colocarlos en el nuevo diseño de asientos. Esto resultó ser prohibitivo en costos, comparado con la compra de bancos totalmente nuevos.
  
• Los bancos antiguos se ofrecerán gratuitamente a cualquier iglesia de la zona que los necesite o quiera. Ayúdanos a encontrar tales iglesias que necesiten nuevos asientos y proporciona los nombres a la oficina parroquial.

¿Cómo serán los nuevos bancos?

Los nuevos bancos serán más ergonómicos, haciéndolos más cómodos cuando la gente se recueste para sentarse. Los reclinatorios estarán tapizados. El color de la mancha y el material de los reclinatorios serán decididos por un comité de voluntarios seleccionados por el Consejo Pastoral.

¿Permanecerán el gran estandarte colorido y el crucifijo en la iglesia?

• El estandarte, aunque único y hermoso, tiene 50 años y muestra su edad. Será retirado y se pueden hacer recomendaciones al Consejo Pastoral.
  
• El gran crucifijo será movido. Se montará donde está el estandarte ahora.

¿Quiénes son los participantes en el proyecto de renovación?

• Compañía Boudreaux en Columbia, el arquitecto utilizado por el Padre Peter para el primer diseño.
• Nuestro Contratista General tiene mucha experiencia en la diócesis y es muy respetado.
• Un feligrés, que trabajó muchos años en ingeniería acústica, es un consultor voluntario.
• Un feligrés que es subcontratista de nuestro Contratista General. Está coordinando la posible ayuda de nuestra parroquia. Además, el Consejo Pastoral y el Consejo de Finanzas brindan aportes de manera continua. El Consejo Pastoral se reúne mensualmente y es una reunión abierta si algún feligrés desea asistir.
• Un comité de voluntarios seleccionados por el Consejo Pastoral proporcionará aportes sobre cuestiones pendientes de los toques finales.
• Los líderes de los coros anglo e hispano fueron consultados sobre los diseños antes de presentarlos a la Diócesis.

¿Un plan de renovación parroquial necesita ser aprobado por la Diócesis?

¡SÍ! Cada aspecto de una renovación necesita la aprobación diocesana, la cual nuestro plan tiene hasta la fecha.

¿Cómo se está financiando el proyecto de renovación? ¿La iglesia tendrá que pedir un préstamo?

• Una fuente principal de financiamiento para esta renovación es la Campaña del Bicentenario que comenzó en 2019. Muchos feligreses hicieron promesas de tres años. Cada parroquia era elegible para recibir dinero recolectado sobre la meta establecida por la diócesis. Debido al Covid, algunos pagos de promesas se han retrasado y aún están llegando.
  
• El proyecto también se está financiando con parte de la cuenta de ahorros de la parroquia. NO será necesario asegurar un préstamo para este proyecto.

¿Por qué se está haciendo esta renovación ahora?

Los fondos de la Campaña del Bicentenario se recolectaron para este propósito. La iglesia necesita más asientos y actualizaciones ahora. Los costos de diseño, mano de obra y materiales aumentan continuamente cuanto más se retrasa la renovación.

He oído que el espacio para los ministerios de música se reducirá bastante. ¿Es esto cierto? Si es así, ¿por qué?

La necesidad de hacer espacio para más bancos afectó algunas asignaciones de espacio actuales. Nuestro Contratista General dice que el espacio asignado al coro es muy generoso en comparación con otras iglesias de tamaño similar. Los ministros de música trabajarán juntos para ser creativos en hacer que el espacio funcione para la parroquia.

¿Cómo puedo ofrecer sugerencias?

El mejor método para hacer cualquier pregunta sobre la parroquia es asistir a las reuniones mensuales del Consejo Pastoral. Esta es una reunión abierta para todos los feligreses. Las sugerencias se pueden hacer al final de la reunión para que el Consejo Pastoral las considere.
